Nerja town centre
What makes Nerja unique? Unlike other continental Spanish resorts it’s quiet and not very well known amongst tourists. No coffee chains or fast food restaurants in Nerja, and no big nightclubs or loud unruly music. It’s incredibly clean and well looked after by the locals and is filled with local businesses selling local produce.
Things to do when you visit Nerja
Take yourself down to the local Burriana beach 5-minutes walk east of the Balcon de Europa square. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see with plenty of cheap local restaurants, cafes and bars along the promenade. It’s never too busy except for peak summer season, but never too noisy. There are other beaches to just off the Balcon de Europa and the Balcon de Europa Hotel both smaller and quieter than the Burriana. More the reason to visit Nerja.
A great feature of holidaying in Nerja is everything is within a short walk of the town centre. At the end of Calle Cisne are the local markets open every Tuesday and Sunday from 10am until the midday heat of 2pm. The best way to get to the markets is to walk (circa 30mins) or catch the bus – there are bus stops outside the Hotel Monica, Hotel Parador and the main bus stop at Calle Antonio Jimenez, 4, just 10 mins walk north of the main square. Typical items for sales are food, potteries and ceramics – typical of the Axarquia area – this area is an historical area of Andalucía – which has a mix of beaches, coves and caves synonymous with the region.
